Nathan Ryan Voelkner born May 2, 2009 at 4:27 PM6 lbs. 4 oz. 19 inches
Baby Nathan surprised us and arrived 4-weeks early! Scott and I were completely caught off guard and left in shock the night it was all over. On Thursday April 30, I went for my 36 week check-up and the Doctor said I was showing signs of Preeclampsia (pregnancy induced hypertension and toxemia) and she put me on strict bed rest. I was very upset because I was feeling fine and I did not want to start my maternity leave 4-weeks early since that would take away from my time with the baby. I had a follow-up appointment on Saturday so I followed Doctor’s orders and stayed in bed all day Friday. I was bored to tears and anxious to get approved to go back to work. Saturday morning Scott and I went to the Doctor for a fetal non-stress test to measure the baby’s movement and contractions. Everything checked-out good for the baby and I had no contractions, but the Doctor still wanted me on bed rest. I was very frustrated that I could not return to work and finally I got her to agree to let me work from home, so I would not have to start my maternity leave. This was the week before Mother’s Day and the busiest week of the year at FTD.com where I work, so I was missing a lot. Two hours later Scott and I were at home making lunch and my bag of water broke. We were uncertain what this meant for timing since it was 4-weeks before my due date and I had no contractions. Scott scanned through our childbirth books and we thought it was pre-term labor and that we had plenty of time. Soon after my body felt the need to clean itself out and I spent the next hour in the bathroom, at that point the pain was very strong and we knew something was wrong and needed to go to the hospital. On the way there I felt pain and pressure in my back and bottom and felt the urge to push. At the hospital I said, “I need to push!” The nurse immediately got me in to a room and 27 minutes later baby Nathan was born. The event from start to finish was 2.5 hours and I thanked God for blessing me with a healthy baby and short labor.
Nathan is now over 2-weeks old and the most amazing accomplishment of our life. He is a good baby who simply wants to be fed, changed and held which is fine by me as I can’t stop starring and admiring him. Everyone says to enjoy it now as they grow-up so fast…so we are taking in every picture we can commit to memory.Thank you for all of your love and support!
